The contraceptive patch is a contraceptive method that consists of a 4.5-centimeter patch that releases hormones through the skin into the bloodstream.

How does the contraceptive patch work?

The patch contains a combination of progesterone and estrogen, which are hormones with the function of controlling ovulation. This method of pregnancy management actually prevents the release of an egg from the ovary, and without ovulation, there is no chance of getting pregnant.

Similar to other hormone-based birth control methods, the patch also thickens cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to travel in the uterus to reach the eggs that may have been released.

Last but not least, the patch also works on the lining of the uterus, making it unfavorable for the implantation of a fertilized egg.

How to use the contraceptive patch?

As with any other method of pregnancy management, the use of the patch depends on the menstrual cycle. The patch is placed on the skin on the first day of the period and then changed once a week for three weeks in a row. You can apply the patch to the abdomen, upper torso, buttocks, or upper arms, but not the breasts. No patch is worn during the fourth week, and this is the time when the period begins.

For best effectiveness, the contraceptive patch should be applied to the skin on the same day of the week, so that it continues to provide protection. You should not apply the new patch in exactly the same place as the other one, to avoid local irritation of the skin.

What happens if the patch falls off?

In case the patch comes off by accident or you forget to apply it on the correct day, you should talk to your doctor and carefully read the instructions for use on the package. The protection wears off within 24 hours of not using the patch. You must use an alternative method of birth control or not have sex to avoid pregnancy.
