When you’re looking for tractors for sale, you’ll hear many terms for the different features available. It’s a good idea to talk to a professional about the standard and optional features of any model you’re considering so you can make an informed decision that’s right for your particular use.

Standard and integrated features:

Tires: Most compact tractors have an R1 farm bar tread with the familiar raised diagonal bar design. It is made to get good traction in dirt, sand and mud. Some models have an R4 tread, which has wider bar spacing, and the bars are not as raised, meaning it won’t dig as deep into the ground as the R1.

Engine: A diesel engine is much more powerful than typical gasoline engines. They are designed to generate a lot of torque, which is a measure of turning power rather than speed. Engines are designed to last a long time if properly maintained.

Drawbar – The drawbar is a hitch that connects to the tractor frame and is used to pull another piece of equipment behind it, such as a cart or wagon.

Transmission: Just as a car has a transmission, so does a tractor. While automatic transmission models are available, most are manual shift.

Power Steering – While you may find a used model for sale that doesn’t have power steering, most tractors for sale today have the same smooth steering that is available in your car. Unless you’re going to be using the rig in an area without a lot of twists or turns, you’ll want to make sure yours has this feature.

Three-point hitch: This is a triangle-shaped hydraulic system that allows you to hitch attachments, such as a bush-hog or plow. The two side arms pull and lift the attachment while the upper (middle) arm controls the angle. The hitch lifts the attachment off the ground as needed.

Additional options

Four Wheel Drive: A tractor is driven by the rear axle. If you opt for a four-wheel drive model, you can engage the front axle when needed, such as in the mud or on steep, rough terrain. This option will cost more, but is worth it for some configurations.

Front Loader: This is a huge bucket that attaches to the front of the rig. It can help easily move hay, manure, branches, and much more.

Hydrostatic transmission: With this option, you can change gears without having to manually adjust them. This is not the same as having an automatic transmission, but it does make changing gears easier as there is no clutch.

Some other useful additions that will make certain jobs easier include:

Mower – Available in many different widths, this attachment attaches to the back of your deck and allows you to clear weeds and cut grass.

Post Hole Digger – If you have a lot of fences around your property, this accessory will come in handy. It is also useful if you are going to build or plant large trees.

Snow Blower – If you are in an area prone to heavy snowfall, this will work with your front loader to clear a path more easily.

You’ll find a wide variety of tractors for sale for virtually any farm or ranch. Consider how you plan to use the equipment and talk to a professional about the right model and features for your application.
