Cleaning tile floors by dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, and damp mopping is sometimes not enough. Problems with tile floors, like badly stained grout and budding wax, need thorough cleaning with a cleaner stronger than plain water. Although commercial cleaners are always available at your favorite store, they are usually expensive. With this article, I am trying to provide you with alternatives to commercial cleaners. Not only is it less expensive, but homemade tile floor cleaner is just as effective as its name-brand counterparts, but it’s more environmentally friendly.

Recipe #1: For gentle cleaning, add mild dish soap to hot water at a ratio of 3 tablespoons of dish detergent to 2 gallons of water. When mopping, discard the solution and replace it with the new one when the mixture turns cloudy. A second rinse is needed after mopping.

Recipe #2: Mix and stir one gallon of hot water with one cup of baking soda, one cup of ammonia, and ¾ cup of white vinegar. Put some in a spray bottle while reserving the rest for later cleaning. Spray solution directly onto floor tiles, one stream per area. Then, regularly mop the floor using a 1:10 mixture of vinegar and hot water.

Recipe #3: To eradicate very thick grout stains, mix hot water and hydrogen peroxide in a 1:1 spray bottle and shake well. Spray the solution directly onto the grout and allow it to sit for half an hour before removing the stain. When necessary, repeat the step. However, instead of leaving the solution on for 30 minutes, this second spray takes 20 minutes before cleaning the stains. However, this solution is not applicable for colored grout as it will remove the color.

Recipe #4: For a scented tile floor cleaner, add 1/3 cup white vinegar and a few drops of lemon or orange essential oils to 2 gallons of hot water. In addition to cleaning the floor effectively, the essential oil blend makes the floor smell fresher. You can buy essential oils at craft stores. Experiment with other essential oil scents like lavender or jasmine for a unique scent.

Recipe #5 – When you need to disinfect your floor, mix ½ cup of borax and 2 gallons of hot water. The mixture is a great disinfectant for any floor, even the bathroom floor. You do not need to rinse the floor after mopping the floor with this solution. Borax is cheap and easy to find. Keeping a generous amount of borax in your home can be to your advantage as this mineral is an all-purpose cleaning agent.
