Kenya is located in East Africa. It is a leading tourist destination not only in Africa but also in the world. In fact, the safari concept originated in Kenya. The stunning scenery, abundant wildlife, culture and pleasant year-round climate attract visitors from many parts of the world. Kenya became independent in 1963 from British colonization with Mzee Jomo Kenyatta as its first president. Daniel Moi succeeded him after his death in 1978 until 2002. It is a democratic country with many political parties under the leadership of President Mwai Kibaki.

Kenya is a developing country with more than 50 percent of the local population living below the poverty line. War, drought and diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria have contributed to poverty, killing hundreds of people and young children every day. The corruption of Kenyan leaders who barely care about their poor parents, sisters and brothers has made the situation even worse. As a result, more than 50 percent of the country’s population is illiterate.

Kenya is considered the sail of humanity. According to archaeological research, modern man first appeared in Kenya around Lake Turkana. A team of archaeologists from the National Museum of Kenya and the University of Utah discovered giant fossils along the Lokitaung Gorge in 2004.

Mount Kenya is the highest peak in the country and the second highest in Africa after Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the only mountain in the country where there is permanent snow and ice. Other mountains include Mount Elgon, Mount Longonot, and Ol Doinyo Orok Mountain.

Many of the country’s lakes are located in the Great Rift Valley. These lakes include; Lakes Naivasha, Oleidon, Nakuru, Turkana, Bogoria and Magadi. Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa and is shared by the three East African countries (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania). Lake Nakuru and Lake Oleidon are famous tourist destinations and home to millions of pink flamingo birds.

Kenya has one of the world’s largest wildebeest migration shows in the Masai Mara Game Reserve next to Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. There are many parks in Kenya where you will see many species of wildlife. This includes animals such as the lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, elephant, rhino, buffalo, zebra, antelope, among other wildlife. You will also see monkeys, birds, reptiles and many butterflies.

The Indian Ocean coastline in Mombasa, which is about 500 kilometers long, attracts both local and foreign visitors. It is a good place to spend your vacation and relax on the white sand beaches, swim or tour the islands.
