Continuing with the towns of Lantau Island.

mui-wo

Mui Wo is located on the eastern side of Lantau Island and can be reached by ferry from Central Pier No. 6 and also by bus from Hong Kong via Tung Chung and on to Mui Wo.

Mui Wo has some history of being linked to the Southern Song Dynasty, silver was also produced in the silver mines along the Silver River during the second half of the 19th century. There is a silver mine left, but unfortunately it is sealed for security reasons.

The silver name now appears in the name of the local area, such as silver mine bay, silver mine beach, and the ferry terminal is called silver mine ferry terminal.

Upon arrival in Mui Wo, exit the ferry terminal and proceed to the bus terminal area and taxi rank.

The Lantau bus company operates a series of buses to different places within the island, they are the following:

1- to Tai o 1 (City on stilts)

2- to Ngong Ping 2 (Buddha)

3- to Tung Chung 3m

4- to Tong Fuk 4

All of these vehicles are air-conditioned single-decker coaches and run pretty good hours. There are two more buses that go to the airport (Chep lap Kok) a35, but this service only runs 5 one way trips per day. In addition, the n35 is a night vehicle that circulates only 2 out and 2 out. The schedules of these buses and all the bus routes can be obtained from the bus company.

Mui Wo has its fair share of shops ranging from (food) stores, electrical to gift shops and many more, and of course Mui Wo has a McDonald’s. There are also many real estate agents offering lease or purchase within the Lantau area. Also, there are restaurants and cafes in town and on the way to Silvermine beach. Within the Mui Wo district there are large map boards detailing the local sights and, of course, directions to each of these places.

Walking north to the beach area, you travel along a tree-lined sidewalk along the waterfront, past a series of gift shops and restaurants. On reaching the beach you will pass the Silvermine Hotel which serves a good selection of meals.

The beach is large, uncrowded and safe, with lift guards on duty. The facilities are first class with toilets, changing rooms and a shower block for men and women. Within the beach area there are areas b, q and a large playground for children, swings, slides and climbing structures.

Strolling through the beach area, you enter the old town of Mui Wo, which has to offer an indoor food and vegetable market (known as kau tsuen), a library and a swimming pool, there is also the government building which also houses the post office and clinics.

there are places of interest like the silver mine water fall (but only after it rains) which has a picnic area and a b,q area. Then there is the Hung Shing temple and the old Chung Hau mansion plus the (locked) silver mine. Mui Wo is also the start point and end point of the Lantau trails, but other trails lead from Mui Wo to Discovery Bay. When you reach the top, you can take the coastal route past the Trappist Monastery to Nim Shue wan or Discovery. Bay Golf Club offering a panoramic view of Discovery Bay. Mui Wo is surrounded by sea on one side and mountains on the other, Lin fa Shan is 700m high. Mui Wo is a bustling city with lots to do and is well worth a visit.

All of Lantau’s walks and trails will be listed in future articles and some of them offer exceptional views of the surrounding islands.

My next article will be about the cities of Tai O and Discovery Bay.
