The movie Planet 51 starts out like most sci-fi movies from the 1950s. You see an alien boy and girl from Planet 51 sitting on a road watching a movie, when suddenly an alien appears. This stranger is known to the occupants of Planet 51 as Humaniacs and their mission is to end life on Planet 51 or transform the people of Planet 51 into zombies. The human stalks the boy and girl from Planet 51 and leads you to think that he thinks them or turns them into zombies. At the height of this scene from the movie Planet 51 you realize that what you’re actually seeing on the screen is a movie and a little boy is sitting in the theater watching it, until his mother pulls him out of the theater .
Then the real movie Planet 51 continues and we meet Lem, a lanky teenager who has finally just found his dream occupation at the museum. Lem gets a job as an assistant curator and the whole town applauds the boy. Lem then finds the woman of his fantasies, Nessa. Nessa is the world to Lem and he has longed for her for years. Lem now has more security in her job, so he wants to ask her out, but her very hippy friend of hers keeps getting in her way. Lem gives up and leaves.
Later that day, the inhabitants of Planet 51 hear a crash. Lem, like most people, comes from Planet 51 out of his homes. Lem sees a strange rocket, which they refer to as a flying saucer, descending and landing on Planet 51. He lands and strides forward Chuck the astronaut (from Earth, you can tell, because he looks quite human). The Cosmonaut is unaware that the residents of Planet 51 are after him. Chuck gets off his lunar module and, after placing the flag on the ground of Planet 51, plants a rubber ducky. The Cosmonaut without knowing that Planet 51 has life. He surveys the inhabitants of Planet 51 and yells. Chuck runs and hides. During one part, Chuck is trying to run away and falls and the moon is visible behind him. The cosmonaut climbs on the moon. This is an acknowledgment to the movie AND the alien. Chuck hides and then the army shows up checking Chuck’s rocket. The army is commanded by General Grawl, who doesn’t want any Martians to come to Planet 51 from him and doesn’t want to be turned into a zombie.
General Grawl sets up his army and military ATVs around the spaceship and decides to set up a base. Lem’s residence is his decision. There is only one dilemma, Lem has now befriended the Cosmonaut and has agreed to cover for him. Chuck and Lem had met at the museum and had been scared to death. Chuck made Lem feel bad for him, so Lem opted to help Chuck. When they learn that General Grawl is going to set up his base at Lem’s house, the Cosmonaut and Lem run away, just barely past the soldiers with their military ATVs. Chuck and Lem, with the help of Rover and two zombie soldiers, hide Chuck in the comic book market. They decide to use the media to prove that the Cosmonaut is not a zombie-driven devourer of Planet 51’s inhabitants or a weirdo. Lem leaves to find the media, but while he’s gone, Chuck quotes lines from Star Wars and the Terminator. The Cosmonaut is watched by the journalist filming and playing this story all over Planet 51, further terrifying the residents.
Chuck and Lem finally escape this problem and later that night at a costume party everything goes great. They all choose to dress up as Chuck the astronaut. What better time for Chuck to flee to his Planet 51 rocket and ship. Of course, it’s a spaceship. Chuck is seen to be slightly taller than the other aliens and his flag on the side of his costume is a clear indication that the Cosmonaut is distinctly different from the inhabitants of Planet 51. General Grawl along with the Professor follow them with the military ATVs and finally catch Chuck and Lem. Lem is allowed to go while Chuck and Rover are being held elsewhere. Then you see military ATVs coming to try and move Chuck’s Rocket. General Grawl says that the flying saucer will be transported with the military ATV and held in an undisclosed location hidden on Planet 51. He will soon find out about Base 9, which is a secret base.
Lem chooses that he is not going to help the Cosmonaut at first, but then changes his mind. He and the rest of the group, including Nessa and her cool hippy friend of hers, come to Chuck’s aid. Lem and his friends manage to rescue Chuck and take him back to his spaceship. Upon leaving Base 9 it begins to explode and the Cosmonaut revisits General Grawl. This changes General Grawl’s thoughts on Chuck. He takes them all back to their planet 51 and Chuck’s home of belief. It is then shown that the Cosmonaut has a stowaway dog from Planet 51 on board. He makes you wonder what Chuck does when he discovers the dog.
