Insulating your garage is a great project that can give you cost savings and a place to work in the winter. Garage insulation can even keep your house warmer if your garage is attached to your house. This is often a step that builders skip in an effort to cut costs.

If you have a workspace in your garage, insulation can keep it more comfortable all year long. Best of all, it can help prevent equipment noise from disturbing people outside the garage. If your garage walls are plaster, don’t automatically assume they’re insulated. Sometimes you can tell by looking at the bottom or top of the wall. If not, you can easily drill a small hole in a less noticeable part of the wall. Take a look with a flashlight or feel with your finger to determine if there is insulation or not.

Once you’ve determined your need for garage insulation, you don’t have to remove the drywall to insulate. Spray foam insulation can be installed through the holes in the top of the drywall between the studs. The foam will run down the wall and expand, blocking air movement once it has cured.

If you are working with open garage walls, you can install fiberglass battens between the studs. They are very easy to stabilize in place if you have a few hands to help you hold them. Remember to wear pants, long sleeves, gloves, and safety glasses when installing. Working with this material can irritate the skin and eyes, so it’s best to play with caution.
