The best time to travel in Tibet is usually from April to November. But it also depends on where you would like to visit. In the lower altitude places like Lhasa, Tsedang, Gyantse, Shigatse and Nyingchi, you can travel at any time of the year. The climate in those areas is temperate, without much cold or heat. In the winter season from December to March, although it is very cold, you will see fewer tourists and during that time, the cost of accommodation and car rental will also be lower. And the winter season also offers a greater chance to see the great Mount Everest clearly.

July and August are the rainy seasons in Tibet, mainly night rains which usually won’t affect your tourism during the day, but will bring some difficulties for trekking tours. These two months could see about half of the annual rainfall in Tibet.

April, October and November often bring brilliantly clear weather and you can feel very comfortable in the lower altitude spots.

For some popular tours, you may need to be aware of the following weather restrictions:

  • Everest Region: Though Lhasa-Everest-Lhasa tour is available all year round, Lhasa-Everest-Kathmandu overland tour might be impossible in some snowy weather in January or February, especially Old Tingri – Nyalam part – Zhangmu.
  • Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, as well as Northern Tibet (including Lake Namtso) – are generally not passable in the winter seasons, from December to March.
  • Eastern Tibet: Try to avoid traveling on the Sichuan-Tibet highway in the rainy seasons of July and August.

In addition to the above weather issues that you need to consider when planning a trip to Tibet, you should also prepare for strong solar radiation and large temperature difference between day and night to travel there.
