The best way to describe how an escapement works is by comparing it to the human repertory system. The piping throughout the exhaust system is how the gases are released, and in a custom exhaust system, the gases can be released more effectively.

Think about when we exercise. Human lungs basically work similar to how the tube works. Carbon dioxide from the human body is released through the lungs while we exercise. If our lungs stop working, we all know that it becomes harder to breathe (smokers!).

The larger the exhaust system, the more easily the created gases can escape. In an aftermarket system, the outlet pipes will always be larger. When these gases can escape more easily, there is less pressure from the toxic fumes. This will also create more horsepower for the car.

Many people always assume that the bigger the pipes, the better. It sounds like that would be the case, however if the pipes are too big it can cause the gases to move more slowly. Always make sure low end torque is not wasted. The most efficient way to determine the correct size pipes is based on the RPM produced. Every engine is different so it will vary.

Another benefit of an aftermarket exhaust is that they don’t use flattened bent pipes in the exhaust like stock exhausts do. Crushed bent pipe is when a ring is placed around the pipes. This creates an uneven passage that also slows down the release of gases. You should always look for a mandrel bent exhaust system. Mandrel bent tubing is a much smoother way for gases to exit since the diameter is the same throughout.
